Hope Initiatives SA - Namibia

Communities living in squatter settlements of Namibia are some of the hardest hit in terms of the HIV/Aids. The communities where Hope Initiatives SA- Namibia runs its programme has to date more than 700 OVCs (Orphans and Vulnerable Children) whose basic rights to education, food and child welfare are not adequately met.

As the situation worsens we expect to have more and more OVCs in situations needing urgent intervention - In squatter settlements which are mostly child and women headed single parent families can no longer cope and therefore many Orphans cannot go to school; Do not have food at all: Have no decent housing: and sometimes are in need of counseling and other help.

The Hope Initiatives SA- Namibia is successfully targeting informal settlement communities of Okahandja park, Kilimanjaro and surrounding settlements focusing development interventions on 700 Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) and their families through community institution based and outreach programmes which include Health and Nutrition programmes , Education, Back to school and Schooling Programmes , Income Generation ,Support Groups for persons living with HIV/AIDS and children at risk. With a fantastic team of 25 local community and International volunteers and staff , HISA implements its programmes from three community Centres namely the HISA Bridging School in Okuruyangava/Ombili, Kilimanjaro Community Development Centre in Kilimanjaro Settlement, Okahandja park Hand in Hand Soup Kitchen .

About Hisa Namibia

Our History - HISA Namibia was born out of a need when in 2003 , Patricia Sola witnessed a group of hungry children fighting and scrambling to eat remains in a Pot that had been discarded... Touched by the plight of the orphans and Vulnerable children who were facing extreme hunger and a multiplicity of other difficulties in Informal settlement of Okahandja Park Windhoek Patricia Sola Mafukidze and John Mafukidze the founders began cooking food from their house and bringing it to out Okahandja Park to feed 30 orphans and the Vulnerable children, who quickly increased to 90... When the soup kitchen found a shack in Okahandja Park from which it could operate,the numbers increased further to 150.– A baseline information collection exercise carried out in November 2003 informed the programme intervention. By 2004 it blossomed to embrace a community based intervention programme that was catering for 150 OVCs and 30 caregivers. With the registration of the project as a not for Gain Organization , Hope Initiatives Southern Africa-Namibia opened its doors to the further programmes. Today HISA runs programmes from three centres in Kilimandjaro, Okahandja Park, and Ombili/Okuruyangava that benefit 700 children and youth at risk, 200 adults affected and infected with HIV/AIDS.
